Video Surveillance Vol. 23: Careless

UK fidget house duo Jack Beats has delivered a mind bending visual to accompany their latest single ‘Careless.’ Takura made it onto the track as the featured vocalist as well as onto the music video with the lead role.

We are introduced to Takura’s character as he slowly starts to gain consciousness while seated in a wheelchair with an IV in arm. As he struggles to make it onto his feet, we are immediately drawn to the brick wall that houses his shadow in the background. With each passing step, his shadow begins to shape-shift in harmony with the beat. It’s almost as if Takura’s shadow has the ability to mirror the way he is feeling on the inside. His shadow takes on some pretty interesting forms including a gorilla, T-Rex, and a tank.

Insomniac Donates $115,000 to Five Charitable Organizations

image

As part of honoring its commitment to charitable giving, today Insomniac made a $115,000 donation to five charities: four Las Vegas charities as well as a contribution to a national initiative with Rock the Vote. Funds raised through the annual Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), Las Vegas, helped Insomniac contribute $30,000 toward Rock the Vote in support of Spin the Vote as well as $25,000 each to the Clark County School-Community Partnership Program, University of Nevada Reno (UNR) Foundation’s Emergency Medicine Resident Research Fund and the Injured Police Officers Fund – Las Vegas. An additional $10,000 was gifted to the Speedway Children’s Charity – Las Vegas Chapter.

“I’m so grateful that for the second year in a row the success of this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival, Las Vegas, is able to directly benefit these amazing organizations, each of which provides unique and vital services to the community,” said Pasquale Rotella, Insomniac’s founder and CEO. “Each of these groups touches our event in one way or another. Whether it’s through encouraging youth to participate in the arts or educating our fans to become politically active, we’re honored to give back to Las Vegas as well as to those who help make our event a success.”

Underworld: Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics

image

The Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games is easily the biggest gig on the planet for Rick Smith of Underworld. Rick was designated as the musical director for the London Olympics, which saw him releasing ‘Isles of Wonder: Music For the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games’ as the soundtrack for arguably the most prestigious event around.

Rick reflects on this momentous achievement by proclaiming, “Music is Britain’s cultural heartbeat; it’s a perpetual act of revolutionary thought. From William Blake to the Beatles via the Clash and the Chemical Brothers, the soundtrack to our lives fizzes and hums all around us like a stray signal from a radio dial that your internal antenna just can’t help but tune into.”

A digital release of Isles of Wonder is available now via iTunes.

A physical release will be made available on August 6th through Decca Records

Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory

Many people agree music holds an inherent power for rejuvenating the mind, body and soul. Michael Rossato-Bennett has dedicated himself to investigating the true power of music with Alive Inside.

Alive Inside is a film that pushes the Music and Memory Project ever-forward by demonstrating how personalized music can help “awaken” patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. “Music is magic. It’s a backdoor into the mind, into the parts of the brain that dementia and Alzheimers can shut off.”

Psyched Out! with Goa Gil

image

The words “music” and “dance” take on a whole new meaning when you are someone like Gilbert Levey. “Since the beginning of time mankind has used music and dance to commune with the Spirit of Nature and the Spirit of the Universe.”

Goa Gil is a name that is deeply rooted in the Psychedelic Movement. Some of the first all night parties that took place on the beaches of Goa can be traced back to his doing. However to Gil, it went beyond just throwing any old beach party. He was more interested in spreading the”Trance Dance Experience,” in which the combination of music and dance was used as a form of spiritual meditation. “We are using Trance Music and the Trance Dance Experience to set off a chain reaction in Consciousness… hopefully people will become more sensitive and aware of themselves, their surroundings, the crossroads of humanity, and the needs of the planet.”

Watch the interview below to get into the psyche of Goa Gil, as gives us a quick history lesson about the music and talks about the Trance Dance Experience.

Video Surveillance Vol. 22: Nothing Matters

Toolroom Records leader Mark Knight has dropped the music video for his new single ‘Nothing Matters,’ which is just as intense as the tech house track has shown to be.

In a futuristic world that is unkind to men, our main character is seen fleeing the clutches of his oppressive matriarchal government. Barely escaping the grasp of the authority figures closing in, he must cower in the shadows as he attempts to make it back home to his long lost lover. With eyes in the sky and a strong presence in the street, it seems like an impossible task. Watch the video to see if he makes it home alive and find out what’s behind the dystopian society.

Goldie: 'Sound and Color' → bassrush.tumblr.com

image

Before he started crafting massive drum and bass tunes and running his own Metalheadz label, GOLDIE was mobbing the streets of the UK with a can of paint securely latched in his hand. Although its been a long time coming since his street art days of the 80’s, Goldie is not the type to shy away from the opportunity to get his hands a little dirty.

Goldie seems to have a tough time drawing a line between his two passions for music and graffiti. “It has colored my music… What’s an arrangement but shape and color in sound? Sound and color, to me, are the same thing.”

Read about it here and watch the video below:

In the Wake of: Enhanced Concert Series ft. Eric Prydz

image

You want to go outside but you can’t. Not yet. The temperature is sweltering, and thousands of bodies are pressed against you, arms up, then down, limbs flailing, hair flying, heads bobbing. Everyone is in complete unison, and you begin to feel like you might need some air.

Instead of going outside, you calm down and zero in on the music, listening for the next song to mix in. The buildup is coming, and you know it’s going to be good. The sub-bass fades out for 16 counts as the progressive synths wind themselves tighter and tighter. You hear an alarm-like buildup that lasts for a straight up fortnight as the drums kick into a running stride. As the pitches soar higher and higher, they seem to fade in and out. Is that Prydz’s doing or is it in your mind? What song is he even playing anymore? You’re slightly confused at what track you’re even listening to but at this point you don’t care. You’ve forgotten how hot it was; all you want to know is what song is going to come up. For some reason, your brain starts firing fight-or-flight responses and tells you a little bit of air might be a good idea. Holy crap, how long has this buildup been going on for?

image

But as soon as you excuse yourself to your friends and begin to take your first steps towards the exit, you hear the beautiful syncopated piano keys of “Pjanoo.” Several thousand people erupt in a united cheer and thousands more arms fly up in the air. You’ve completely forgotten why you were even considering heading to the exit.

If you went through a scenario like this during the Eric Prydz show this past weekend, it appears that we were in the same boat. This legendary man has not been on the continent for four whole years. So getting some fresh air can damn well wait. When Eric Prydz takes the stage at a sold out show, we’re going to listen.

image

The official roster for the evening included our very own Tara Brooks, Jeremy Olander (the production whiz who’s been training under Prydz’s personal guidance) and Arty, who on this special night had THE most difficult job in the musical world: closing for Mr. Prydz.

So for those who were at the show, thank you for joining us. It was a truly epic night and we can’t wait to host the presence of Mr. Prydz once again!

Psyched Out with Logic Bomb

image

Deep in the mystical forests of Goa, India, you can find some of the best parties in the world. Over the years these parties attracted new crowds from all across the globe, crowds eager to experience the unique sounds and spiritual bliss that engulfs visitors when they come to Goa. Among this new crowd of people were freshly graduated computer engineers Jonas Pettersson and Johan Krafft. When they encountered this new and profound musical style, it was love at first beat. The two brought the magical Goa sounds back to their homeland of Sweden and quickly made a name for themselves there under the name “Logic Bomb.”

“Logic Bomb” are considered to be the founders of “scando-trance,” a unique sub-genre of psychedelic trance that is simply their “specific feeling towards the music.” The unstoppable unit has had four successful albums, all the while sticking to what they call the “Logic Bomb sound.” Their steady creative vision has led them to a bountiful touring schedule, support from BBC Radio1, and special attention from Paul Oakenfold, not to mention rave reviews from all sides of the psytrance community. One reviewer stated, “Logic Bomb remind me of how I fell in love with this music. Listening to it makes me want to grab my Tip [Records] t-shirt and run out to the nearest big Psy festival. The world needs more Logic Bomb!”

Tech Yeah! with Chris Liebing

image

If you have been following techno for the last decade or so, chances are you might have come across a CLR release along the way. Since its creation in 1999, tech heads have looked towards CLR because of its reputation for putting out razor sharp, perfectly polished techno.

With Chris Liebing as the CLR founder, it’s no wonder why the imprint has been going strong for thirteen years running. It’s kind of hard not to trust someone of Liebing’s caliber with 20+ years of expertise as a DJ, quality releases as a producer, the CLR label boss, and as the mastermind behind the acclaimed CLR Podcast. In 2009, Chris celebrated 10 years of his label by revamping his brand, giving the CLR name a new meaning: “Create Learn Realize.”

Check out Chris Liebing’s deep yet irresistibly provocative interpretation of Moby’s ‘Lie Down In Darkness’ after the jump.
