Pete was 15 when he landed his first DJ gig at a wedding. After he got a taste for the lifestyle of a disc jockey, he began utilizing his administrative talents by promoting local acts and booking small gigs. Pete’s big break came when he earned himself a regular spot on BBC Radio 1. He was presented as a dance music authority, reporting on trends within club culture, as part of a 15 minute magazine feature on Peter Powell’s radio show. Since then, Pete Tong has pummeled his way to the top, dominating the airwaves of BBC Radio 1 for over 20 years
Pete Tong’s hit radio shows, ‘Essential Mix’ and ‘Essential Selection’ (The Pete Tong Show), have earned the reputation of being a “Welcome to the Weekend” for clubbers and party people alike. The show exhibits an emphasis on house but includes its fair share of techno, jungle, hip hop, funk, and soul - merging both the mainstream and the underground. Pete’s radio show has served as a launchpad for the production careers of countless dance music artists. By giving them the famous “Pete Tong Push” where legends like Daft Punk, Tiesto, Carl Cox, Sasha, and The Chemical Brothers were all first heard on his radio show.
Pete’s talents have no limitations. Aside from his music career, he has also established himself within the film industry. Pete has worked on the soundtracks of hit movies like The Beach, Human Traffic, Event Horizon and 24 Hour Party People. His strongest characteristic is his ability to change with the times. Pete has managed to adapt and evolve his taste in music accordingly, finding new ways to impress his audience. As he states, “Its our job to come up with new parties, new nights, new venues, new themes to keep the scene fresh and exciting.”
