Wide Awake With Ground Control
“Stay Happy, Healthy and Hydrated!” This mission statement encompasses the three most important goals of the Insomniac Ground Control team. Founded after EDC 2010, Ground Control is made up of an enthusiastic group of individuals who are passionate about EDM and the spread of safety and positive vibes at each Insomniac festival. While you and your friends are enjoying the event, Ground Control is there to help make sure you have the most memorable experience possible. Whether you need assistance, or just a friendly face to talk to, you can always find solace in the support of the Ground Control team.
We sat down with Ground Control supervisor Haley Miller to learn more.
What are Ground Control’s various responsibilities during Insomniac events?
Ground Control’s #1 responsibility is making sure everybody is staying happy, healthy and hydrated at Insomniac events. They walk around in groups of 3 or 4 distributing water, high fives and hugs. You can ask these volunteers anything, and they’ll do anything they can to answer that question. When they find a headliner that looks like they might be a little disorientated, they reassure them the medical tent is a safe and free place to relax or receive medical attention. They walk attendees to the medical tent, or communicate on a 2 way radio for medical assistance to come to them. It’s our responsibility to let everybody know this event is a safe environment for everybody to come as they are and have fun with their friends!
How many volunteers usually make up the Ground Control team during an event?
When Ground Control started a couple of years ago, it consisted of roughly 30-40 volunteers. We now have anywhere from 80-120 volunteers per show…and the numbers keep growing!
What kind of people do you look for when selecting a Ground Control Team?
Approachable and outgoing individuals who have been to festivals before and are familiar with Insomniac events. Our volunteers have genuine compassion and love for their EDM community and want to maintain the health and safety of headliners at our events. They know how to recognize when a person needs help and the proper steps to take in order to assist them. Our volunteers also help reconnect lost festie-besties and are extremely patient and kind to all festival-goers.
What are the most fulfilling parts about working with Ground Control?
Helping people, plain and simple. Whether it’s handing out “life saving” water or preventing a serious medical issue, Ground Control volunteers receive more hugs, “I love you’s,” kandi, and high fives than we can even keep track of. They are highly appreciated by every attendee they come across, and walk away with a new group of friends that share common interests.
What makes Ground Control such an important aspect of each Insomniac festival?
With EDM gaining more popularity within the recent years, Insomniac’s festivals are growing exponentially larger. It is our responsibility to make sure everybody exits our festivals as happy and healthy as they were when they entered. Our #1 priority has always been the experience of the headliner. Ground Control reinforces this very unique, important aspect of Insomniac festivals.
How is volunteering with Ground Control a rewarding opportunity for people who enjoy music events?
Similar to any festival production job, Ground Control requires long hours on your feet combined with mental and physical strain.Volunteering with Ground Control prepares individuals who may be interested in pursuing a career in events, customer service or the health and safety field. There are a wide range of opportunities and lessons to be learned while experiencing a festival from behind-the-scenes.

In 3 DAYS we embark on our haunting adventure through Wonderland!
The Insomnniac: Pasquale Rotella
Insomniac’s head owl, Pasquale Rotella, invited journalist Dennis Romero along for a helicopter ride to EDC Vegas 2013.
Although the two may have had some trouble seeing eye-to-eye in the past, Dennis and Pasquale found an understanding after engaging in an in-depth interview which chronicles the rise of Pasquale’s experience-centered vision. The outcome would land Pasquale the LA Weekly cover story entitled ‘How Pasquale Rotella Built His Rave Empire' which tells the tale of “The Insomniac.”

In the Wake of: Nocturnal Wonderland 2013
It was another dazzling journey down the rabbit hole at Nocturnal Wonderland. Beautiful, starry-eyed faces filled the grassy field as we entered a colorful world of wonder and exhilaration. The atmosphere was simply electrifying.
On September 21st, the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, CA was taken over by lights, music, and lively festival goers from around the world. We revamped the largest outdoor amphitheater in the US with a slew of Alice in Wonderland and night owl inspired props and visuals, carnival rides, fireworks, and roaming costumed performers and theatrics. We turned the giant venue into a wondrous playground where our Headliners could frolic freely and enjoy the essence of the Nocturnal experience with others who share the same passion for the culture. The event hosted five themed stages: the Labyrinth, Sunken Garden, Alice’s House, the Queen’s Grounds and the Discovery Project Art Car. Each brilliantly lit stage displayed highly intricate and decorative set dressings, and hosted a diverse lineup of high profile performers who played from 3:00pm-2:00am for grasslands of large, vibrant crowds.
We also hosted the first ever Camp Nocturnal, where Headliners were able to camp out from Friday through Sunday and participate in a number of recreational activities, arts and crafts, and even a silent disco. The campground was the perfect meeting place for all our innovative Headliners to demonstrate their creativity and show off their personalities while hanging out with friends and making new ones. There was nothing but positive vibes floating through the campground, making this festival experience unforgettable.
The magical ambiance of Nocturnal was undeniable. We could feel the adrenaline rush through our veins as we moved from one stage to the next. The happiness of those around us was contagious and people known and unknown to each other joined hands to embrace the transcendent melodic breakdowns. As the sun made its way to the horizon, the picturesque scene became even more surreal. It wasn’t long before we realized in that extraordinary few hours of time we were wide awake living the ultimate Nocturnal experience.
This year’s Nocturnal reached new, amplified heights, with thousands of beautiful festival attendees. The energy really came alive thanks to YOU, our amazing Headliners. Be sure to join us for yet another epic adventure at Escape from Wonderland, October 26, 2013. Tickets are now available, so get yours here.
